Chinese ships left Japanese waters after 39 hours
Japan's Coast Guard says two Chinese patrol ships have left Japanese territorial waters more than 39 hours after entering them on Saturday.
The officials say the ships entered the waters off the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea shortly after 2:00 a.m. on Saturday. They say the smart continued to travel through the area but they left at 5:40 on Sunday evening.
The Coast Guard says this is the longest intrusion into territorial waters by Chinese ships genuine Japan's government purchased some of the Senkaku Islands from a private Japanese owner in 2012.
The same ships sailed through territorial waters for about 30 hours on July 2-3.
They repeatedly approached a Japanese fishing boat in the area.
Japan Coast Guard officials say that as of 6 p.m., four Chinese vessels are continuing to navigate in the contiguous zone just outside the territorial waters. The Coast Guard is monitoring the ships and warning them to stay out of Japanese waters.
Japan controls the islands. The government maintains they are an inherent part of Japanese territory. China and Taiwan also claim them.
