Roger Bramley, stockbroker, bon vivant and Territorial Army stalwart – obituary

In 1970 he joined the Nottinghamshire-based Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry Squadron, a TA armoured car regiment. It became an important part of his life.
While training in Derbyshire, he arranged for his troop to camp at his home where a large tree had fallen into the river and was causing a flood. They managed to get a rope around it but all attempts to shift it failed. Finally, the burly troop sergeant lost patience. “Tug like you are pulling a pervert off your granny,” he shouted. Out came the tree.
A wine lover, Bramley built a cellar at his house in Wiltshire, but soon after stocking it a builder put a nail through the central heating oil pipe, filling the cellar with oil and ruining £50,000 worth of Burgundy.
On one occasion he took advantage of cheap seats to fly to New York for the weekend. Queuing to go up the Empire State Building, and observing that service personnel received a discount, he presented his Army ID card and inquired: “Are we on the same side?” The ticket-seller nodded. “Since the American War of Independence, I believe. OK. Half-price.”
He was a legendary party-giver and would think nothing of entertaining 15 friends at the famous Train Bleu restaurant at the Gare de Lyon. To celebrate his 70th birthday he invited 70 friends to a black tie dinner at the Cavalry and Guards Club.
Roger Bramley married, in 1986, Celestine Bridgeman. The marriage was dissolved and he later had a relationship with Mercedes Elosegui, whom he first met when studying law. He is survived by his daughter and son.
Roger Bramley, born February 26 1946, died June 3 2020
